Michael was born in Clarksburg, West Virginia, and graduated from Robert C. Byrd High School in 2009. He attended West Virginia University and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in English in 2013. Michael was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society and was awarded the Virginia Butts Sturm Scholarship given to an outstanding sophomore English major. While in undergrad at WVU, Michael was also an assistant coach for the Morgantown High School Mohigans wrestling team under longtime head coach Tom Powers.

After graduation, Michael attended the West Virginia University College of Law and graduated in 2016 with the honor of Order of the Barristers and with Pro Bono distinction. While in law school, Michael competed in the National Moot Court Competition held in Richmond, Virginia. He finished runner-up in WVU Law’s Baker Cup Appellate Advocacy Competition and earned the honor of being able to argue in front of the West Virginia Supreme Court. Additionally, Michael served as the President of the Labor Law Society, Secretary and competitor in the Lugar Trial Association, and was a certified magistrate court mediator. Michael was a research assistant for professor Robert M. Bastress and helped conduct research into the issue of legislative gerrymandering in West Virginia. In his third year, Michael was selected to work in WVU Law’s Supreme Court Clinic and was also awarded the James H. Coleman law scholarship for exemplary academic promise from a native West Virginian.

Michael worked as a summer clerk for McNeer, Highland, McMunn and Varner in the summer of 2015 and returned to work full time in the fall of 2016 after his successful completion of the West Virginia Bar Exam. Michael was sworn in the West Virginia Bar and Federal Court in the Southern District of West Virginia on Wednesday, September 21, 2016. Michael focuses his practice on insurance defense, labor and employment law, and commercial litigation. In his spare time, Michael enjoys lifting weights, golfing, spending time with family, and attending WVU sporting events, especially wrestling matches. Michael is a lifelong member of Clarksburg’s Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church.
